What is the Farm Inputs Program?
Launched in 2021 by the Loreen JM Banda Foundation, the Farm Inputs & Enhancement Program equips farmers in Ntchisi, Malawi, with soft loans at 12% interest, drip irrigation systems, and high-yield seeds like hybrid maize and legumes. Over 450 farmers have boosted their harvests by 55%, ensuring food security for their families. In 2025, we've raised $15,250 toward our $25,000 goal to support 150 more farmers with training in climate-smart agriculture. By promoting sustainable farming, we're cultivating resilient communities and combating hunger across Malawi.
Empowering Over 450 Households Through Irrigation and Farm Input Support in Ntchisi
At the heart of the rural hills of Ntchisi, a quiet transformation is taking place—led by the Loreen J.M. Banda Foundation (LJMB). With a commitment to sustainable development and food security, the foundation is bringing hope and resilience to over 450 households, both women and men, through an innovative gravity-fed irrigation system.
A Lifeline for Farmers
For decades, many communities in Ntchisi relied solely on unpredictable rainfall to grow their crops. This left them vulnerable to hunger and poverty during dry spells. Through LJMB's Chinaudza Irrigation Scheme, sponsored and powered by gravity rather than expensive electrical pumps, families can now grow food all year round.
This simple but life-changing system taps into highland water sources and channels the flow through a network of pipes and canals directly to the farms below. No fuel. No electricity. Just smart, sustainable engineering.
Inclusive and Community-Driven
The program supports both women and men equally, ensuring no one is left behind. From single mothers to youth-headed households, the irrigation initiative has become a symbol of empowerment and dignity.
In addition to irrigation, the Foundation also provides:
- Farm inputs such as seeds and fertilizers
- Training in climate-smart agriculture
- Support in forming cooperative groups for better market access
